"How to Pick Bean Trees"
Gathering up old boat tires and Irish Catholics,
heading to the creek and washing the burnt religion
happens before heading to the mud ditches covered
in rotting bean flesh.
Moss green pods and split wood shells rot in
the backwoods of McGaha Church in the cove beyond
the masked cemetery.
Here, the mums sings soprano, the hay sings bass,
and the corn husks pick up tenor. The bean trees
read the sacred heart notes, handling the snake
through its reading glass.
Pick up there, climb up,
and you will see the heavenly shoots.
